About the Directory
Throughout the spring and summer of 1999, hundreds of health organizations and centres
in the province were asked to provide information about the resources they hold and
information services they provide to the public. An overwhelming majority of groups
responded, and you can locate them through this web site.
In some cases, we were unable
to list groups because we could not verify their existence. Others are included with
bare-bones information gleaned from other media. Where we found it difficult to contact a
local group, we have included the address and phone number of its national organization.
In defining consumer health, we have focused on the medical rather than social
determinants of health, such as employment status or education level. While some listings
relate to these social factors, this was not our mandate.
This directory lists sources of health information generally accessible to the
Newfoundland and Labrador public without referral. While we did not intend to document
provincial health services, we have listed provincial health facilities in the province (i.e. hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and long term care facilities).
For information on health services, contact your family doctor or the Health and Community Services office in your region.
To aid you in searching the online directory, we have organized it into regional and national
sections. The regional sections are based on the boundaries of the four Regional Health Authorities
in the province.
The national section lists Canadian (and some American) organizations that serve the
entire country but do not have a Newfoundland and Labrador office or contact. A search of
any provincial region in the directory will also find national listings on the topic, so a
separate national search is not necessary.
We have made every effort to ensure that the information listed here is current and
correct. Since many organizations are staffed by volunteers in home offices, you may find
that some information is no longer valid. If you discover that the information about a
particular group is incorrect or if you wish to register a new group please
use our New and Updated Listings Form. You may also call
or write us at the address below.
